Players don't need to open the item, rather, all they have to do is wait for it to hatch.

Eggs aren't necessarily a new item in World of Warcraft, though the Hairy Egg is a bit of a special case. While journeying in Maldraxxus, players might have received a Hairy Egg item from a Strange Growth in Forgotten Wounds. The Hairy Egg is one mysterious item, and figuring out what to do with it might take some time, but it does have a purpose. Piled in with this new content is a healthy helping of new mounts, creatures, and items. The old name can still be found in the Plaguefall dungeon, on the skeletons known as Defenders of Many Eyes.World of Warcraft: Shadowlands brings a ton of new content for players to enjoy, with entirely new zones, dungeons, and more to pad out adventuring time throughout the game.

As befit its name, it was the intelligence arm of Maldraxxus, gathering intel in the worlds of the living and the dead. Filled with those who fought, lived, and died by their wits and cunning, it was a tenacious and cunning force in Maldraxxus. The House of Eyes is one of the five houses that rule Maldraxxus, whose members are called the Eyes.
